If you visit The Riverside Church in New York City, make sure you do not miss seeing the third stained glass window on the left side of the sanctuary, originally designed to express “God is Love” in several languages. At the
lower left side of that window, you will see the words “上帝是愛 (God is Love)”, which were written by a Taiwanese Ph.D. scholar, Lin Mosei (林茂生, Romanized Lîm Bō͘-seng), who was the first overseas Taiwanese student to
receive a Ph.D. in the United States. He attended Columbia University from 1927-29, during the years when The Riverside Church was being built and the stained glass
windows were being made. Mr. Lin was invited to write “上帝是愛” in Taiwanese because he was also an esteemed calligrapher and a Christian. Unfortunately, Lin disappeared within days of the February 28
Incident in Taiwan in 1947. He is generally believed to have been killed as a part of the Chinese Nationalist Party's crackdown after the island-wide civilian uprising.
