Hide Mirror Man (藏鏡人) is a very wellknown term in Taiwan’s puppet show it implies to the guy who is hiding behindthe scenes. And Changing Color Dragon (變色龍) means a person who changes mind and decision immediately accordingto the occasion just like a chameleon replicates its skin to match itssurroundings.
September 24 the"Sing! China: Shanghai-Taipei Music Festival" sponsored by the citygovernments of Shanghai and co-sponsored by Taipei City government wasprotested by a group of angry NTU students who argued that the festival hadcaused the school's sports field to be closed to students for a week whilepreparations were made and that it had caused damage to the newly-renovatedfacilities there. They strongly questioned the school’s decision to rent thevenue for the event.
Thefestival in memorandums ofunderstanding on cultural and arts events is to promote friendship between citizens of Shanghaiand Taipei cities unfortunately Shanghai government took it as a tool ofUnited-Front activity. First they called the school “Taipei City TaiwanUniversity” onposters;second, they also denied NTUstudents and sport teams use of the field and its track.
Students did not like the Chinese organizer had changedtheir school name from the "National Taiwan University" to the"Taipei Municipal Taiwan University." Before the festival kicked offat 2 pm, students protested outside the venue. Soon, they boughttickets and moved their protest inside, shouting slogans waving banners that read“Refuse to be China Taiwan University” “We are Taiwan NationalUniversity, not China Taiwan University.” “Return my trackfield” and “Taiwan with map” and doing whatever they could to drown outthe singers on stage. Eventually, they stormed the stage itself, bringing thefestival to an early end.
Chung Yung-feng (鍾永豐),director of Taipei City’s Department of Cultural Affairs and co-sponsor of thefestival had started talking with NTU officials at 3:00pm and agreed with theirdecision to call off the event for the sake of safety, but Shanghai MunicipalTaiwan Affairs Office Director Li Wenhui (李文輝) did not agree at the first momentand caused delayed, heregretted that the decision to suspend the activity came so late until 4:40pm.
What surprised us, the Shanghai City’s Taiwan affairs chiefLi who was present at the time of protest, kept a low profile and declined tomake any comment on the untoward commotion, but he was the one who made thefinal decision to call off the activity not Taipei City’s Cultural Affairsdirector Chung, nor NTU administration officer. So, Li was the real decisionmaker behind the screens. Asthe crowd dispersed, things quickly descended into chaos and violence as the studentson their way homeattacked by members of the Chinese Unity Promotion Party theyare pro-China supporters.
Aswe recall, August 3, 2013 there were about 250,000 demonstrators forming theWhite Shirt Army known as the August Snow Movement to protest against theinjustice of the death of Hung Chung-chiu (洪仲丘).That’s the birth of the white power group in Taiwan and the majority of them wereyoung generation and college students. They successfully sent Ko Wen-je intoTaipei Mayor’s office and Ko always names himself as the representative of theWhite Power.
Ko has been totally disappointed by the NTU students at theSing China event. Why did he put so much effort to promote the United Frontactivity for China and give no compassion to those beaten students? He had officiallyvisited the Daan Branch Roosevelt Road police station to cheer them up, butsilently met with victims in tea party. It is really hard to understand he immediatelyblamed those anti-pension reform protesters blocking the Taipei 2017 Universiadeopening ceremony were bastards, but he keeps silence on those students attackedby the pro-China supporters.
Maybe Ko is so proud of his white power shinning with rosyglory and now he cares the red more than his original dark green marks. What acolorful change from the dark green, descendant of 228 victim to the whitepower, spirit of pursuing justice to the rosy glory, both sides of TaiwanStraits are the same family and life community. He seems very enjoy what he hasbeen.
Now, you know who is the political chameleon actively in Taiwan political stage color from dark green, snow white to rosy red, acts as a diplomat andharmonizer between people with differing viewpoints, do you think he willbe the next Taipei Mayor?
