Turning grief into power, taking action to master life and marching into a new era of Taiwan!
February 28 this year had three remarkable events, splashed paint, launched the Joy and Happiness Coalition, and US Senate passed Taiwan Travel Act to commemorate the seventy first anniversary of the 228 Massacre in which about 28,000 Taiwanese were killed in the weeks following the 1947 uprising, and tens of thousands were murdered during the White Terror era.
Ash to ash dust to dust, after death the dead body should be returned to earth. But, Chiang Kai-shek (蔣介石), culpritand murder of the 228 Massacre died on 5 April 1975 his corpse is still not buried yet as of today, the imperial scale of the mausoleum was a provocation to Taiwan people.
Taiwan legislative Yuan passed the Act of transitional justice on 27 December last year. Article 5 specified that the commemoration of public buildings orplace and the symbol of remembrance of authoritarian rulers should be removed, renamed, or otherwise disposed of. Unfortunately, there is still agiant statue of CKS in Taipei memorial hall and his corpse still guarded by military police all day long it cost Taiwan taxpayers over $NT 40 million ayear. What an absurd!
After 10am on that day, ten young protesters led by Fu Jen Catholic University student Luo Yi (羅宜) carryinga banner wording “Abolish China authoritarian rule, establish the Republic of Taiwan”, splashed red paint on the coffin of CKS, the generalissimo who fled to Taiwan after losing China’s civil war to the Mao Zedong and who declared martial law on the island that lasted until 1987, 12 years after his death.
What ashame, Chiang was an evil devil, killer, executioner and dictator but he still receives worship in Taiwan even he had died 43 years already. According to the transitional justice act, Chiang’s statue should be removed and his corpse should be buried, but the DPP government has no any action to exercise the newly constituted law. Now, Luo and his group took action toabolish China authoritarian symbol for the public but they were arrested, kept in custody then release after paid a high premium of bail. What a ridiculous judicial system!
Under the ROC, either KMT or DPP government are not much different, took the branch for the root and put the cart before the horse, Taiwan people totally upset and disappointed in their handling of the justice transition.
Do people under military occupation have right to self-determine their own future? Yes, the UN Charter clearly specifies that a people, based on respect for the principle of equal rights and fair equality of opportunity, have the right to freely choose their sovereignty and international political status with no interference. Under this principle the UN members grew from 51 after WWII to 193 now.
HaveTaiwan people ever been offered the right of self-determination after war? Unfortunately no, since the ceasefire in 1945 Taiwan was military occupied by CKS then naturalized as Chinese of an illusionary nation the Republic of China. So, Taiwan people have not had any chance to exercise their rights of self-determination over 73 years and their voices almost ignored and forgot.
Well, not until 28 February 2018 the situation has been improved, Formosa TV chairman Kuo Bei-hung (郭倍宏) held apress conference announcing the Island of Joy andHappiness Coalition (喜樂島聯盟) will be launched on April 7, campaigning for a Taiwanese independence referendum which was endorsed by former president LeeTeng-hui (李登輝), Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁), former vicepresident Annette Lu (呂秀蓮) and former presidentialadviser Peng Ming-min (彭明敏), none of them are incumbent, as well as minority party leaders, the New Power Party, the Taiwan Solidarity Union, the Social Democratic Party and the Taiwan Radical Wings.
They plan to campaign it for one year and hold the referendum on April 6 next year with the believes that Taiwan’s sovereignty and political legitimacy come from the authorization of its 23 million people via direct elections and have nothing to do with China.
The coalition is heading at the right direction to raise Taiwanese voice of self-determination, Taiwan as the military occupied territory the people are stillentitled to claim their over delayed rights since 1951. Without the public announcement, the entire world even the US thought Taiwan people would rather be recognized as Chinese.
On the same day, the US Senate unanimously passed the Taiwan Travel Act, which was passed by the US House of Representatives without opposition in January. The legislation now only needs US President Donald Trump’s signature to become law. Once it became a law, the policy will allow US officials at all levels to travel to Taiwan to meet their Taiwanese counterparts, permit high-level Taiwanese officials to enter the US “under respectful conditions” and meet with US officials, and encourage Taiwanese economic and cultural representatives to conduct business in the US.
China opposed the bill, its Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Hua Chunying (華春瑩) said, “It seriously violates the one China principle and Chinais strongly dissatisfied and firmly opposes it.”
The Taiwan status has been twisted and ignored by China for decades, it is about time for Taiwanpeople to voice out who they are Chinese or Taiwanese, and what they want amember of one China under Xi’s dictatorship of Chinese Communist or Taiwan is not part of China under the democratic system.
The new compound of the American Institute in Taiwan will be completed and open to Taiwan people in the coming June, maybe Taiwan will have the honor of President Trump’s visit at that time.Taiwan is marching toward joy and happiness. There could have more vicious attacks like KMT member sprayed hairspray on Tsay Ting-kuei (蔡丁貴), this kind of barbaric behavior must be prevented and stopped. Let’s take action to plunge into thishistoric turning point of Taiwan.
