Former President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) attended an academic seminar held in National ChengChi University (政大) on July 27. He publicly criticized the new version of high school history curriculum has Taiwan sovereignty undecided, it was driven by Tsai’s government denied the legitimacy of its national sovereignty. He said a governor should defend sovereignty not to deny it.
Ma said even there was not any signature on the Cairo Declaration but it was the most important announcement declared by the big three of WWII, the effect was equal to a treaty, it claimed all territories such as the four northeastern provinces, Taiwan and Pescadores should be returned to ROC. The text of the declaration written in Article 8 of the Potsdam Declaration required to be implemented. He further pointed out that the first and sixth paragraphs of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender mentioned the Potsdam Declaration, which means that the Cairo Declaration, the Potsdam Declaration and the Japanese Instrument of surrender are trinity.
Also, he said the Sino-Japanese peace treaty signed by ROC and Japan at the Taipei Hotel. Japan agreed to abandon Taiwan’s sovereignty and recognized the Shimonoseki Treaty became void null because of the war. The Taiwanese people have the nationality of ROC. The various provisions of this treaty apply to all territories control by ROC.
Ma knows nothing of Taiwan History.
Unfortunately, none of his statement is fact and accurate. Obviously, Ma knows nothing of the true history of Taiwan. Let’s point it out one by one, hopefully he can catch up.
First, there was not any general consensus in the Cairo Conference, so no signature to endorse it.
1943 the big three did not reach general consensus for their meeting in Cairo that’s why no any signature to endorse it. Yes, CKS (蔣介石) did ask to retrieve Taiwan and Penghu but they were not the territories Japan ravened in WWII and all allies had promised not to expand any territory after war.
Second, the Potsdam Conference was for the peace treaty of European Theater, CKS was absent.
CKS did not attend the Potsdam Conference, Taiwan and the Pescadores were not mentioned in the meeting at all. The Article 8, “The terms of the Cairo Declaration shall be carried out and Japanese sovereignty shall be limited to the islands of Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, Shikoku and such minor islands as we determine” is the guideline limitation of Japan’s territory after war.
Third, all unequal treaties were retroacted back to 1901, not 1895.
Under the Article 10 of the San Francisco Peace Treaty, Japan renounced all special rights and interests in China, including all benefits and privileges resulting from the provisions of the final Protocol signed at Peking on 7 September 1901. All so called the unequal treaties only retroacted back to 1901 not the Shimonoseki Treaty in 1895.
Fourth, Taiwanese were deprived free choice of nationality, it was a war crime.
The Taipei Treaty aka Sino-Japanese Treaty was a bilateral treaty signed by Japan and ROC to end the war in China theater under the authorization of SFPT Article 26. Article 10 stipulates “nationals of the ROC shall be deemed to include all the inhabitants and former inhabitants of Taiwan and Penghu and their descendants…” So Taiwan people were deemed and included as ROC nationals at the presence of Taipei Treaty, but it was abrogated on September 29, 1972. So, Taiwanese are stateless people today according to the US Federal Court District Judge Rosemary Collyer.
Fifth, Japan has never transferred Taiwan sovereignty to ROC.
The SFPT Article 2b, Japan renounces all right, title and claim to Formosa and the Pescadores and Article 23, the US as the principal occupying power. Japan has never transferred the sovereignty of Taiwan and Penghu to ROC at all for in 1952 it was an exiled government already.
It is really awkward that Ma knows nothing of Taiwan history but attempted he does. What a shame just like an illiterate and buffoon. Well, let’s get it straight. Taiwan people are entitled to read the true and correct history of Taiwan. We all need to learn the new high school history curriculum. Hope it will enlighten us to know who we are and the real identification of Taiwan’s final political status.
